On August 26, 2023, a significant milestone was achieved as representatives from Sri Sumangala College, SSCOBA, and Bluesmart (Pvt) Ltd came together to formalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU signifies our collective commitment to implementing the school management system within Sri Sumangala College.

The school management system represents a comprehensive solution tailored to streamline various facets of educational administration. It encompasses student management, teacher management, and education flow management, all designed to seamlessly integrate with our college’s distinct educational processes. With this implementation, we anticipate a substantial increase in management efficiency, offering clear visibility into critical data.

Under the leadership and guidance of our President, Mr. Aravinda Perera, SSCOBA takes pride in facilitating and funding this transformative project from its inception to its full deployment. It is our pleasure to inform you that Sumangalian, the SSCOBA President, Veteran banker Mr. Aravinda Perera appointed as the Chairman of Pan Asia Banking Corporation PLC with effect from 11^th August 2023.

Appointed to the Pan Asia Banking Corporation PLC Board in August 2017, he counts over 37 years in the banking sector and functioned as the Managing Director of Sampath Bank PLC from 1st January 2012, until his retirement in September 2016.

Presently he is the Managing Director of Royal Ceramics Lanka PLC and Chairman of Singer Finance (Lanka) PLC. He is a Director of Hayleys PLC, Hayleys Aventura (Private) Ltd., Fentons Ltd., and Hayleys Advantis Ltd. He is also a former Governing Board Member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and Past President of the Association of Professional Bankers, Sri Lanka.

Mr. Perera was honoured with the ‘CEO Leadership Achievement Award 2016’ by the Asian Banker and was also the recipient of the prestigious ‘Platinum Honours – 2014’ award by the Postgraduate Institute of Management Alumni (PIMA) of Sri Jayewardenapura University. He was also honoured with the ‘Award for the Outstanding Contribution to the Banking Industry – 2015’ by the Association of Professional Bankers and was also awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Association of Professional Bankers in October 2018.

He is a Member of the Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka (MIESL) and a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.). He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) (FCMA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers – Sri Lanka (FIB). He also holds an MBA from the Post Graduate Institute of Management.

Mr. Perera held the position of President for the Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Association between 1992 and 1998, and then resumed his presidential role in 2022, which he continues to hold presently.

SSCOBA takes this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Perera on his new appointment and wish him all the very best in his future endeavors.

The 101st Annual Get-together was held at the Blue Waters Hotel at Wadduwa on 24th June from 1900Hrs onwards. The Chief Guest at this occasion was our distinguished old boy, Rear Admiral Asanga Ranasuriya. The event was successful & well attended and became more colourful due to the presence of the wives of our old boys. Several prizes were drawn during the evening get-together. FREEZE enthralled the audience with their music and the Sway Dance Troupe delivered enchanting dance performances.

101st Annual General Meeting of SSCOBA was held successfully on 24th June 2023 from 0830hrs onwards at the college auditorium with an overwhelming attendance of members. New office bearers were appointed for the year 2023/2024.

Mr. Aravinda Perera, a reputed corporate leader in the country has been once again appointed as the President to steer the association this year as well. Mr. Dhanuka Kottahachchi and Mr. Dinesh Ketipearachchi were appointed as Joint Secretaries and Mr. Prabhath Tharaka Suranga was appointed as the Treasurer.

The meeting was attended by the Principal, representatives from other affiliations of OBA including the President of Junior OBA Mr. Malith De Silva, the Treasurer of Colombo Branch Mr. Charitha Gunathilake, and the President of the Past Cricketers’ Association Mr. Rohan Perera.

A large number of distinguished old boys of various disciplines took part in the event and expressed their views constructively.

The Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Association (SSCOBA) is set to host its 101st Annual Reunion on 24th June 2023. This prestigious event will unfold at the idyllic Blue Water Hotel and Spa in Wadduwa, kicking off at 6.30 pm to the rhythmic beats of the renowned band, FREEZE.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, two of Sri Sumangala College’s most esteemed alumni are set to grace the event. The night’s Chief Guest is none other than Rear Admiral Asanga Ranasuriya, an illustrious son of our Alma Mater. Also honouring the event is Iran Champika de Silva, Principal of Bandaranayake College, Gampaha, who will be our esteemed Guest of Honor. Both are proud embodiments of the values and excellence Sri Sumangala College stands for.

Steering the evening’s festivities will be our very own Sumangalians, Kelum Srimal and Kamila Fernando, who are excited to bring their charisma to the event as the official comperes. Adding a splash of elegance and vibrancy, the Sway Dance Troupe is ready to deliver enchanting dance performances.

This year also, the Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Association proudly contributed to the Alms Giving event organized by the college in commemoration of its 114th Founders’ Day with Rs 225,000/-. 19 වන සියවසේ බෞද්ධ පුනරුදය ඇති කිරීමෙහිලා මුලිකත්වය ගත් ඇතැම් සංඝයා වහන්සේලාට ඉතිහාසයේ හිමිවිය යුතුව තිබු නිසි තැන උරුම වුයේ ද යන්න දෙවරක් නොව දහස් වරක් සිතා බැලිය යුතු කරුණකි. 19 වන සියවසේ ඉංග්‍රීසි මිෂනාරී බලපෑම් හමුවේ නිර්මල බුදුදහම සහ සිංහල සභ්‍යත්තවය වැළලී යද්දී නිර්මල බුදුදහමේ සහ සිංහල සභ්‍යත්තවයේ පෝෂණය වෙනුවෙන් නිබඳව නැගී සිටි යතිවරයාණ කෙනෙකු වශයෙන් අති පූජනීය ශාසනවංශාලංකාර කවිධජ විනයාචාර්යය වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල නායක ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේ හැඳින්විය හැක. උන්වහන්සේ අපවත් වී අදට වසර 118 කී. ඒ වෙනුවෙන් උන්වහන්සේගේ ජීවන චරිතය අලලා ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලයීය ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය සටහන් කර තබන සංක්ෂිප්ත වාර්තාවකි මේ.

වර්ෂ 1825 දෙසැම්බර් මස 07 වන දින දී දකුණුලක වැලිගම දී ප්‍රභූ පවුලක සිවුවන දරුවා ලෙස ජන්මලාභය ලැබූ උන්වහන්සේගේ දෙමාපියන් වූයේ ලොකුබදු ජයසූරිය පැටබැඳිගේ දොන් ඒබ්‍රහම් ජයසූරිය සහ එම මැතිණියයි. උන්වහන්සේ එංගලන්තට යවා අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා දී වෛද්‍යවරයෙකු කිරීමේ පරම අභිලාශය දෙමාපියන් සතුව පැවතියත් කුඩා කල ඇති වූ රෝගී තත්වයක් නිසා මෙම අදහස අත්හැර දමන්නට සිදු වු බව කියැවේ.

උන්වහන්සේ වැරැල්ලාවේ පදුම ගබ්භාරාමයේ අධිපතිව වැඩ විසු මහෝපාධ්‍යාය පැරෑලියේ ශ්‍රී ජිනරතන මා හිමියන් වෙතින් අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබීම ආරම්භ කළහ. ක්‍රි.ව. 1837 දී පමණ එවකට දිවයිනෙහි සංස්කෘත භාෂාව පිළිබඳ ප්‍රවීණ භික්ෂුවක ලෙස සැලකූ බෙන්තොට පුරාණ විහාරාධිපතිව වැඩ විසූ බෙන්තොට අත්තදස්සි නායක ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේ සමීපයෙහි උන්වහන්සේගේ ශිෂ්‍යයෙකු ලෙස අධ්‍යාපනය හැදෑරු බව කියැවේ. තම ගුරු හිමියන් ඇසුරෙන් පාලි හා සංස්කෘත භාෂා විශාරදයෙකු වූ සුමංගල හිමියෝ පානදුරා වාදයේ දී බෞද්ධ පක්‍ෂයට ඉමහත් ශක්තියක් වුයේ වාදීභසිංහ මොහොට්ටිවත්තේ ගුණානන්ද හිමියන්ට වාදයට අවශ්‍ය ධර්ම ඥාණය ලබා දෙමිනි.

බෞද්ධයින් විසින් දැක පහන් සංවේගනා උපදවා ගතයුතු ස්ථාන 4ක් ලෙස බුදුහිමියෝ අනුදැන වදාල ස්ථාන අතුරින් එකක් වූ බුද්ධගයාව හින්දු භක්තිකයින්ගෙන් බේරා ගැනීමේ සටනෙහි ආරම්භක පියවර තබනු ලැබුවේ වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේ බව කියැවේ. බෞද්ධයින්ගේ මුදුන් මල්කඩක් බඳු වූ බුද්ධගයාවට මහන්තා ඇතුළු හින්දු පූජකවරුන් විසින් සිදු කර ඇති ඛේදනීය තත්ත්වය එවකට ලන්ඩන් ටෙලිග්‍රාෆ් පුවත්පතේ කතෘවරයෙකු ලෙස කටයුතු කළ තම සමීප මිතුරෙකු වූද ආසියාවේ ආලෝකය ලෙස සිංහලයට පරිවර්තනය වූ ලයිට් ඔෆ් ඒෂියා (Light of Asia) කෘතිය රචනා කළ ශ්‍රීමත් එඞ්වින් ආර්නල්ඞ් මැතිතුමා මාර්ගයෙන් ලෝක අවධානයට නතු කිරීමට උන්වහන්සේට හැකි විය.

ශ්‍රීමත් එඞ්වින් ආර්නල්ඞ් මැතිතුමා විසින් රචිත “India Revisited” නම් ග්‍රන්ථයෙන් මෙසේ සඳහන්ව ඇත.

These  Kind Buddhists of  Panadura  had adorned their audience – room and temple with palm branches and complimentary inscriptions wrought in flowers and coloured leaves, and provide shelter and refreshment for as in this Charming Sea Side village, where Senegalese scenery may be witnessed at its best. after the far too flattering ceremonies of the morning had been concluded I had the pleasure and advantage of a private interview with the chief priest, During two hours  or more, in the library in his Vihara ……….. After many questions about the localities in the life history of Buddha, Which I had recently visited, he expressed and ardent wish that the Buddhist might same day recover the guardianship of that sacred ground at Buddha Gaya, where “The Lord” meditated so long under the Boddhi tree, and finally attained his Buddhaship. He said that this place and kasia, in the north west, where the great Teacher entered in to Nirwana, Were too spots which ought no longer to be in any hands except those of Buddhist………. 

අවසානයේ බුද්ධගයාව බෞද්ධයින් අතට නැවත පත් විය. එහෙත් ඒ වන විට සුමංගල හිමියෝ අපවත්ව සිටියහ. බුද්ධගයාව බෞද්ධයින් අතට පත් කර ගැනිමේ සටනේ වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේගේ කාර්යයභාරය ඉන්දීය ලේඛකයෙකු වූ Dipak Kumar Barua තම “Buddhagaya Temple its History” නම් ග්‍රන්ථයේ ද ප්‍රශංසාත්මකව සාකච්ඡසාකච්ඡාවට ලක් කර ඇත.

බුද්ධ ධර්මය විෂයෙහි මුන් වහන්සේගේ දැනුම් සම්භාරය කෙබඳු වීද යත් හිතෝපදේශ සංස්කරණය, ඉතිහාසය, මුග්ධබෝධ නම් සංස්කෘත ව්‍යාකරණ ග්‍රන්ථයට සිද්ධාන්තශේකර නම් ව්‍යාඛ්‍යායනක් ද මුන්වහන්සේ අතින් ලියැවුණු ග්‍රන්ථ කිහිපයකි. එවක පැල්මඩුල්ලේ පැවැත්වූ ධර්ම සංගායනාවේ ප්‍රමුඛත්වය ගත්තේ ද උන්වහන්සේම ය.

යටත්විජිත සමයෙහි ක්‍රිස්තියානි මිෂනාරීන් විසින් බෞද්ධ අධ්‍යාපනය ක්‍රිස්තියානි මිෂනාරීන් මත පතුරුවාලන පාසල් විවෘත කරද්දී මුන්වහන්සේ පානදුර රන්කොත් විහාරයට අනුබද්ධ ශ්‍රී සෞගත පිරිවෙන 1896 දී ආරම්භ කරන ලදී.

උන්වහන්සේගේ සුපේශල ශික්ෂාකාමී පැවිදි ජීවිතයත් බුදු දහමට සිදු කරනු ලැබු අමරණීය මෙහෙයත් නිසාවෙන් අමරපුර මහා නිකායේ සියලූම භික්ෂු සංඝයා වහන්සේලා 1894 වර්ෂයේ රැස්ව අමරපුර මහා නිකායේ නායක හිමියෝ ලෙස උන්වහන්සේව පත් කරගත් සේක. තමන් උපන් දේශයටත් බුදු දහමටත් අමරණීය සේවාවක් කළ ශ්‍රී සුමංගල මහ නායක හිමියෝ අවුරුදු 80 ක් ආයු වළඳා 1905 වසරේ මාර්තු 13 වන දින අපවත් වී වදාළේ අද වැනි දිනයක දීය.

උන්වහන්සේගේ ශිෂ්‍ය රත්නයක් වු උන්වහන්සේගේ ඇවැමෙන් පානදුර රන්කොත් විහාරයේ ශ්‍රී සෞගත පිරිවෙනෙහි අධිපති ධුරයට පත් වූ පණ්ඩිතාචාර්යය පානදුරේ ඤාණවිමල තිස්ස ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේ උන්වහන්සේගේ මඟ යමින් 1909 මාර්තු මස 03 වන දින ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලය ආරම්භ කිරීමට ඇප කැප වී ක්‍රියා කළහ. අප පාසල ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලය ලෙස නම් කරනු ලැබුවේ ද උන්වහන්සේට උපහාරයක් පිණිස ය. ඒ අර්ථයෙන් ශ්‍රී සුමංගලය සදාකාලීකවම ගුරු උපහාරයකි. පානදුර ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලය හැරුණු කළ වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලය 1927 දී එම නමින් ආරම්භ වුයේ උන්වහන්සේට උපහාරයක් පිණිසමය.

වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේට ගෞරවයක් පිණිස ශ්‍රී ලංකා තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ මුද්දර කාර්යයාංශය විසින් 1988 දී උන්වහන්සේගේ ඡායායාරූප සහිත සමරු මුද්දරයක් එළි දක්වන ලදී.

උන්වහන්සේට උපහාරයක් පිණිස ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලයීය ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය ද වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල නායක මා හිමිපාණන්ගේ ප්‍රතිමාවක් පාසල් භුමියේ ඉදි කර ඇත.

වැලිගම ශ්‍රී සුමංගල ස්වාමීන් වහන්සේ අපවත් වී අදට වසර 118 ක් ගත වුව ද උන්වහන්සේගේ නාමය ලාංකීය බෞද්ධ ඉතිහාසයේ සදා අනුස්මරණියව පවතී. උන්වහන්සේගේ ශාසනික සහ අධ්‍යාපන සේවය වෙනුවෙන් ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලයීය ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය නමස්කාර පුර්වක ගෞරවය බැති සිතින් පුද කර සිටී.

It is our pleasure to inform you that Sumangalian Tilak De Silva, the Patron of SSCOBA, has been appointed as the Chairman of The Engineering Council Sri Lanka (ECSL).

Tilak De Silva has more than 34 years of experience in the IT and Communication fields. He has gained multi-disciplinary exposure in the fields of engineering, Information Technology and global telecom business; he has held the key positions of Head of IT, Chief Global Officer, Chief Network Officer, Advisor to CEO on Technology Strategies and Chief Business Innovation Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT). He has also held the position of CEO of SLT Hong Kong which was a subsidiary of SLT.

He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered IT Professional. He held the prestigious national figure of President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) in the year 2013. He has gained professional memberships in FIE (SL), FIET (UK), FBCS (UK) and SMIEEE (USA).
