Following activities were held to commemorate the Old Boys day on 28.10.2007 at the newly built college premises which was a success with greater participation of the people in and around the Panadura area.

  1. Presentation of Scholarships for needy and excelled students.
  2. Donation of Books worth of Rs. 1,000,000.00 for the College Library by Deshabimanya former Lion Governor old boy Mr. Rohantha de Fonseka.
  3. Donation of Books worth of Rs. 1,000,000.00 for the College Library by the Junior Old Boys Association.
  4. Blood Donation Campaign.
  5. Health Camp to check and prescribe on hearing deficiencies free of charge for the needy people in and around Panadura with the co-operation of Mid City Lions Club.
  6. Distribution of spectacles free of charge for needy after free medical check-ups.
  7. Meals for Home for the Aged, Moravinna Girls’ Home & Home for Handicapped Children (“Aruna Home for Children”) at Panadura on 28th October 2007.
  8. Presentation of awards to the students who won the competition for “Do You Know” contest.

The presentation of scholarships, awards for the winners of Do You Know contest was held with the participation of Deshabimanya former Lion Governor Old Boy Mr. Rohantha de Fonseka.

Below find some of the events in progress.

A procession from the “Rankoth Vihara” temple where the Sri Sumangala College was first established in March 1909 to the newly constructed premises was taken place in the morning prior to the opening ceremony took place. A large gathering, students, college staff, parents, old boys participated at this procession.

The Phase I (part of upper school) of the re-construction works were ceremonially opened by HE Kiyoshi Araki, The Ambassador of Japan along with Hon. Susil Premjayantha – Minister of Education, Hon. Reginold Cooray – Chief Minister-Western Province on 27th September 2007 at 1015 Hrs.

The opening of the newly constructed Buddhist Shrine donated by Ms. Punyakanthi De Silva at the request of the OBA by offering flowers to the Buddha and the opening of plaque to mark the commencement of the works associated with the construction of a Swimming Pool by one of the distinguish old boys of Sri Sumangala College, former Lions Governor, Deshabimannya Rohantha De Fonseka were taken place on the same day. Also Dr. Neville Fernando, a distinguish old boy, donated 16 computers to the school on the same day.

A large distinguish gathering including the members of Maha Sangha, Officials from Embassy of Japan, JICA, JICS, Government Institutions, Local political authorities, Staff of Sumangala College, Students, Parents, Old Boys and well wishers participated at the opening ceremony.

The OBA presented Rs. 50,000.00 to Master Roshan Soysa, a Year 11 student towards an urgent operation in his spine on 26th June 2007.

We wish to express our deep appreciation to all who have offered numerous assistance to our Alma Mater by way of Generous Contributions, Resources and Educational Material etc. for the Tsunami Rehabilitation / recovery process.

We mention with special gratitude to

  2. Dover Middle School, NJ, USA

for their generous contributions towards the school tsunami rehabilitation projects and our special thanks goes to Mr. Turner (Principal) & Miss Thiloka Ratnaike of Colchester High School and Mr. Rob Mains of Dover Middle school for their co-ordination works.

Also we mention with gratitude the Irish Red Cross for constructing 20 temporary class rooms for the students’ use.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

AGM of the OBA was held on 26th May 2007 from 9000Hrs onwards at the school premises with a record number of attendance of well over 250 old boys showing the growing interest of the OBA activities. This is considered to be a good sign for the future of OBA assistance towards the school. New office bearers were appointed for the year 2007/2008. Few positions remained unchanged i.e. President, Jt. Secretaries, Treasurer, Editor and Social Secretary.

The Annual get-together & Fellowship was held with a record number of participants of approx. 400nos, at Villa Ocean View Hotel, Wadduwa with the Chief Guest being an old boy Lion Rohantha De Fonseka, Chairman, Bio-Med International (Pvt) Ltd., and Guest of Honor being an old boy Deshamanya Aruna Abeygoonewardene, Founder Chairman, Sri Lanka – German PINA Foundation. The special guests comprises old boy Mr. Neomal Fernando, Managing Director, JF&I Printers, Mr. Mahinda Illeperuma, Director/Media Advisor to HE President, Mr. Saman Waduge, Addl. Secretary to the HE the President.

A distinguished old boy Dr. W.D. Aamardeva, who is considered as a world renowned musician was felicitated at the AGM.

Also in considering the yeoman service done to the SSC OBA by late Mr. Walter Mendis (former Secretary, OBASSC), this year souvenir has been dedicated to his name.

Addressing the gathering Mr. Rohantha De Fonseka being a founder member of the OBA, Colombo Branch mentioned that he was happy to note the progress made by the present OBA in helping the school with numerous ways and also with the new school construction works. He also announced his wish in constructing a swimming pool for the school amidst a well round of applause. He further informed the gathering that he will donate a fax / photo copier to the school for its office use as well.

Mr. Aruna Abeygoonewardena in his speech stated that he will provide any assistance to the development of the school and the student population. Later he informed the OBA that he will make necessary arrangements to donate a bus capable of carrying 26 students

President OBA, Mr. Sarath Rodrigo welcomed the guests and Mr. L. W. Somatilaka, Principal also addressed the gathering. The vote of thanks was given by the Jt. Secretary, Mr. Anuja Perera. Special thank was paid to Mr. Neomal Fernando, MD, JF&I printers for printing the OBA souvenir at a nominal amount of Rs. 200,000.00, whereas the actual cost would have been around Rs. 1,000,000.00.

Mementos were presented to Dr. W.D. Amaradewa, Lion Rohantha De Fonseka & Deshamanya Ruwan Abeygoonewardena.

Following old boys made donations to OBA at the evening ceremony as described below;

  1. Rs. 100000.00 was donated by Mr. Thungalal Gunerathna for the special fund.
  2. Fax Machine / Photo copier to OBA office by M. Sarath Fernando
  3. Conference Table with Chairs for new OBA office by Mr. Nilantha Samaranayake

Several activities have been planned to commemorate the Old Boys day scheduled for 28.10.2006. Some are mentioned below;

  1. Blood Donation Campaign.
  2. Health Camp by the Junior OBA, with the assistance of OBA parent body with the participation of Doctors & associated medical personnel who are old Sumangalians – Free medical consultancy services including free medicine for needy people in Panadura area.
  3. Distribution of spectacles free of charge for needy after free medical check-ups.
  4. Meals for Home for the Aged, Moravinna Girls’ Home & Home for Handicapped Children (“Aruna Home for Children”) at Panadura on 28th October 2006.
  5. Scholarships for needy Sri Sumangala students.
  6. Inter-school “Do You Know” contest.
  7. Essay & Speech competition.
