98th Old Boys’ Day Celebrations Postponed
We wish to inform our members that the ceremony organized to commemorate the 98th OB day scheduled for 28th October has been postponed due to pandemic conditions in the country. Scholarships, awards for winners of oratory contests, and do you know quiz contests will be given in a future date. Even amidst the pandemic conditions, we did almsgiving to five elderly homes and children’s homes in the area as in the past years.

SSCOBA’s New Executive Committee For The Year 2020/2021 Held It’s 1st Meeting
SSCOBA led by the President, Mr. Mahesh Fonseka, held the very 1st meeting of the new executive committee for the year 2021/2020 on Sunday, 13th of September, 2020 at the SSCOBA Headquarters.

Sumangalian, Vice President of SSCOBA, Mr. Sampath Perera donated a brand new Projector to the College
We would like to thank Sumangalian, Vice President of SSCOBA, Software Development & DevOps Manager at Exetel (Pvt) Ltd, Mr. Sampath Perera for donating Rs 75,000/- worth of brand new Acer Projector with 3 years warranty to the college.
The donation was made through SSCOBA to the Principal Lt. Colonel L. G. P. B. Liyangaskumbura at a small ceremony held at the College recently.
Vice Principal of the College, Ms. Adhikari, Assistant Vice Principal, Mr. Nalaka De Silva, President of SSCOBA, Mr. Mahesh Fonseka, and the Vice-Treasurer of SSCOBA, Mr. Sumedha Perera attended the ceremony.

Passing away of Mr. Tiddy Amarasekera
It is with deep regret to inform you of the demise of Sumangalian, Former Chief Air Traffic Controller of Colombo Airport – Ratmalana, Mr. Tiddy Amarasekera. He was a Former Patron of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Association and one of the longest living Sumangalians (86 years old).
Mr. Amarasekera is the beloved father of Sumangalians, Lishan Amarasekera (Member of the SSCOBA-IT & Digital Subcommittee), and Kanjula Amarasekera (Lives in the USA).
May he attain the supreme bliss of nirvana!

Sumangalian Senior Prof. Liyanage appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura
We were delighted to be informed of the appointment of Sumangalian, Senior. Prof. Sudantha Liyanage (PhD, BSc (Hons), C Chem, FRSC, FIChem C, FPRISL) as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura with immediate effect by His Excellency the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Seniorr. Prof. Liyanage was appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in January 2020. He accepted the role amidst his duties as the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Prior to his appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2019, he was one of the most celebrated Deans of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura during the period 2010-2019.
Senior Prof. Liyanage obtained his PhD from the Cardiff University of Wales, United Kingdom, He has obtained several Post-Doctoral qualifications from the Cardiff University of Wales, University of Adelaide, Australia and Ibaraki University, Japan. Senior Prof. Liyanage being an Alumnus of the University Sri Jayewardenepura, has worked tirelessly to the development of the standards of the University. With his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Prof. Liyanage is the first alumnus Vice-Chancellor from the Faculty of Applied Science.
His commitment to the development of the country goes beyond his services to the University and education. He is a key member of two Presidential Task Forces (Task Force of Education and Task Force of Higher Education) since December 2019 and has provided significant input to develop the electoral system of the country since 2009.
Senior Prof. Liyanage, has over 50 research papers to his name published in high-ranking national and international journals. He has authored several, books monographs and essays. His views on nationally important matters have been featured in over 50 newspaper articles.
His books have gained popularity among many generations Advanced Level Students in both Science and Technology Streams. Senior Prof. Liyanage remains a key influencer in Sri Lanka ever committed to the task of building and developing his mother nation.

98th Annual General Meeting Held Successfully
The 98th AGM of the SSCOBA was held successfully on 05th September 2020 from 9000hrs onwards at the college auditorium with a record number of attendance of old boys showing the growing interest of the OBA activities. This is considered to be a good sign for the future of OBA activities towards our Alma Mater. New office bearers were appointed for the year 2020/2021.
Mr. Mahesh Fonseka got re-elected as the President. Mr. Amila Nawalage & Mr. Dhanuka Kottahachchi elected as Joint Secretaries and Mr. Dinesh Ketipearachchi elected as the Treasure.
In his welcome speech, Mr. Mahesh Fonseka briefed members about the progress of the OBA, projects carried out in 2019/2020, and thanked everyone who supported OBA in numerous ways.
The Principal, Lt. Col. L. G. P. B. Liyanagaskumbura in his speech mentioned that how he wants to give priority to the education as the results have been falling gradually in the last few years. He briefed old boys on how he has utilised college infrastructure and resources and now every teacher has a proper time table.
By addressing the meeting, Sumangalian, Past Principal Mr. J K P Ashokarathna briefed old boys about the importance of the OBA to the college & it’s members and he was happy to note the progress made by the present OBA in helping the school with numerous ways. He also expressed his wish in creating a college archive as soon as possible and he handed over a set of very valuable and important documents related to college and OBA history which were in his possession to the President – Mr. Mahesh Fonseka.
Sumangalian, Past Principal, Past President of OBA, Mr. Wilson Kahandagamage in his speech stated that he is the oldest old boy attending the AGM today and briefed everyone about the history of the college & OBA.
The meeting was attended by representatives from other affiliations of OBA including Junior OBA, Colombo Branch, Past Cricketers’ Association, Past Cadets’ Association, and Aquatic Club.
A large number of distinguish old boys of various disciplines took part in the event and expressed their views constructively.
The vote of thanks was given by the Jt. Secretary, Mr. Amila Nawalage.
