We are proud to announce that, Sumangalian, Lieutenant Colonel GGMG De Silva (Madhu Gopa de Silva) ato assumed the esteemed role of the Commandant of Army Clothing Depot on 08th August 2024, in a dignified and elegant ceremony held at the ACD premises in Veyangoda.

Commencing the day’s proceedings, Deputy Commandant of ACD, extended a warm reception to Lieutenant Colonel GGMG De Silva ato at the main entrance, accompanied by a formal guard turnout. Subsequently, proceeding was lined up with planting a sapling, to symbolize the commencement of duties and the event followed with a commemorative photograph featuring Officers and Other Ranks. After brief religious observance, the new Commandant affixed his signature to a formal document, signifying his acceptance of the duties and responsibilities associated with this prestigious appointment, in the presence of ACD staff.

Newly appointed Commandant attended for the all Ranks tea, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the all ranks of Army Clothing Depot. At the end of proceeding, the new Commandant underscored the importance of collaborative efforts, unity, and adherence to Army rules and regulations, emphasizing a commitment to excellence within the establishment during the troop address with warm wishes of all Officers and Other Ranks of the depot.

ඔබ මේ ඡායා රූපයේ දකින්නේ දශක ගණනාවක් ශ්‍රී සුමංගලයට අභිමානය ගෙන ආ නල්ලුරුව විදු බිමේ මුල් ගොඩනැගිල්ලයි. සුවහසක් උගතුන් දැයට තිළිණ කළ ඒ අභිමානවත් ගොඩනැගිල්ලයි. අප පාඨශාලාවේ නල්ලුරුව භූමියේ වූ මේ ප්‍රථාපවත් ගොඩනැගිල්ල සිසු අයිතියට විවෘත වූයේ 1942 ක් වූ අගෝස්තු 07 වන දින එනම් අද වැනි දිනයක දී ය.

1909 ක් වූ මාර්තු මස 03 වන දින සිසුන් 77 දෙනෙකුගෙන් රන්කොත්විහාර පරිශ්‍රයේදී ශ්‍රී සුමංගලය ආරම්භ වූ අතර ඉතා කෙටි කාලයකින් ශිෂ්‍ය ප්‍රජාව සීඝ්‍රයෙන් වර්ධනය වී තිබේ. අප සතු වාර්තා වලට අනුව පාසල 1911 ක් වූ මැයි මස 16 වන දින රජයේ ආධාර ලබන පාසලක් ලෙස ලියාපදිංචි වන විටත් ශිෂ්‍ය සංඛ්‍යාව 325 දක්වා වර්ධනය වී තිබේ. වර්ධනය වන ශිෂ්‍ය ප්‍රජාවගේ අවශ්‍යතා වෙනුවෙන් රන්කොත්විහාර පරිශ්‍රයේ පාසල් භූමියේ ඉඩකඩ ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවූ හෙයින් නව භූමියක් සොයා ගැනීමේ අවශ්‍යතාවයක් මතු වුනි. එහිදී පාසලේ ආරම්භක ශිෂ්‍යයා වූ පසු කලෙක පාසල් කලමනාකරණ කමිටුවේ කලමනාකරණ ධූරය ද හෙබ වූ වෝල්ටර් සල්ගාදු මහතා අක්කර 2 ක නල්ලුරුවේ පිහිටි තම පුද්ගලික ඉඩම පාසලට පරිත්‍යාග කළ අතර ඒ අනුව යමින් අපගේ ආදි කතෘවරයෙකු වූ කොරනේලිස් පෙරේරා මහතාගේ ආදරණීය බිරිඳ වූ සිසිලියා පෙරේරා මැතිණිය ඇය සතු නල්ලුරුව අක්කර 2 1/4 ක භූමි ප්‍රමාණය විද්‍යාලයට පරිත්‍යාග කිරීමට තරම් පරිත්‍යාගශීලී කාන්තාවක වූවාය.

ඒ අනුව ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය ඩී. එස්. ප්‍රනාන්දු මහතගේ නිසි උද්යෝගයෙන් 1940 දශකය ආරම්භයේදී රන්කොත්විහාර පරිශ්‍රයෙන් පාසල නල්ලුරුව භූමියට ගෙන යාම ආරම්භ වූ අතර කලෙක ශ්‍රී සුමංගලයේ විදුහල්පති ධූරය ද තවත් වරෙක එහි කලමකාකරණ මණ්ඩලයේ කලමනාකරණ ධුරයද දැරූ ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ අධ්‍යාපනඥයෙකු වූ පී. ද එස්. කුලරත්න මැතිතුමාගේ සුරතින් 1940 ක් වූ මාර්තු මස 24 වන දින මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ලට මුල්ගල තබනු ලැබීය.

ඉතා කෙටි කාලයක් තුල ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින්ගෙන් සහ පානදුරේ දානපතීන්ගෙන් ලද ආධාරයන්ගෙන් මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදි කර නිම කිරීමට එවක පාලක මණ්ඩලය සමත් විය. අදාල ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදි කර අවසන් වන විට භූමිය ද සහිතව එහි වටිනාකම එවකට රුපියල් හැත්තෑපන් දහස (රු. 75,000/-) ක් ඉක්ම වූ බව කලමනාකරණ මණ්ඩල වාර්තාවේ සඳහන් වේ.

මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදිකිරීමෙහිලා එවකට ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය දරා තිබූ දායකත්වය කලමනාකරණ මණ්ඩල වාර්තාවේ මෙසේ සටහන්ව ඇත.

“The old boys very enthusiastically undertook a special collection campaign and helped the funds with a collection of Rs. 1,322/59. Mr. H. Dias with the help of the then Principal, Mr. A. M. Silva and the old the present boys staged a play for the purpose of helping the funds and collected a sum of Rs. 954/83.”

අප පාඨශාලාවේ ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයද අභිනව ගොඩනැගිලි තැනවීම පිණිස ඉතා උද්යෝගයෙන් මුදල් රැස් කිරීමේ ව්‍යාපාරයක් ආරම්භ කොට රු. 1,322.59 ක් අපට බාර දුන්හ. එවකට ප්‍රධානාචාර්‍යය ධූරය දැරූ ඒ. එම්. ද සිල්වා මහතාගේ ද ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයන්ගේ සහ දැනට විද්‍යාලයේ ඉගන ගන්නා ශිෂ්‍යයන්ගේ ද ආධාර ඇතුව ගොඩනැගිලි අරමුදල සඳහා සිංහල නාට්‍යයක් (ජානකීහරණය) දක්වා එච්. දියෙස් මහතා විසින් රු.954.83 ක් අපට බාරදෙන ලද බව ස්තූතිපූර්වකව දන්වමු.

ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින්ගේ සහ දානපතීන්ගේ නොමසුරු දායකත්වයෙන් ඉදි වූ ගොඩනැගිල්ල 1942 ක් වූ අගෝස්තු මස 07 වන දින එනම්, අද වැනි දිනයකදී ජාතියට තිළිණ වූයේ ලාංකීය අධ්‍යාපනයේ සුවිශේෂී සලකුණක් තබමිනි. පාසල නල්ලුරුව භූමියෙන් වෑකඩ නව භූමියට ගෙන යන තුරු සිසුන් විශාල ප්‍රමාණයකට සෙවන සැලසූ මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල වර්ථමානයේ ද ලාංකීය ශිෂ්ඨාචාරය පෝෂණය කරන විද්වතුන්ගේ ජීවිත වල තීරනාත්මක නිවහනක් වූ බව නොරහසකි.

මෙම ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ ගොඩනැගිල්ල නිර්මාණය කිරීමේ ගෘහ නිර්මාණ ශිල්පියා වූයේ ඩී. ඒ. ප්‍රනාන්දු මැතිතුමාය. ඒ මහතා ඇතුලූ ඒ වෙනුවෙන් කැප වූ ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින් සහ දානපතීන් අද තම ජීවන ගමනට සමු දී ඇතත් ඔවුන්ගේ සේවය අප සිත් තුල සදා අමරණීයව රැදෙනු ඇත.

ශ්‍රී සුමංගල විද්‍යාලයීය ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයේ පසුගිය රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුව 2024-06-29 වන දින ගොරකාන රමාඩියා (රන්මල්) නිවාඩු නිකේතනයේ දී විශාල ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින් පිරිසකගේ සහභාගීත්වයෙන් පැවැත්වුණි.

ඊට පෙර වසරවල දී බොහෝවිට රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුව පවත්වනු ලැබුවේ The Blue Water Hotel and Spa, Citrus Waskaduwa හෝ Jie Jie Beach by Jetwing වැනි තරු පන්තියේ හෝටල්වල දීය. එම රාත්‍රී සුහද හමු බොහෝවිට ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයට ඉතා අධික වැය බරක් එක් කරනු ලැබුවේය. බොහෝ ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින් නොදැන සිටියාට එම රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුවල ප්‍රවේශපත්‍රයේ වටිනාකමින් කොටසක් ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය විසින් දරනු ලැබුවේය. එම වැයබර සමනය කර ගනු ලැබුවේ ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින් විසින් ලබා දුන් අනුග්‍රාහකත්වයන් මතය.

පසුගිය වසර පුරාවට ම ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය ඉතා විශාල මුදල් ප්‍රමාණයක් පාසල වෙනුවෙන් වැය කරනු ලැබීය. ඒ සියලු මුදල් සපයා ගනු ලැබුවේ ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින්ගේ දායකත්වයෙනි. අප සංගමය විද්‍යාලයේ දියුණුවට කටයුතු කරමින් සිටිය දී විදුහල්පතිතුමා මාර්ගයෙන් දැන ගැනීමට ලැබුණේ පවතින ආර්ථික දුෂ්කරතා මත ආහාර වේල සපයා ගත නොහැකිව පාසල් නොපැමිණෙන දරුවන් ගණනාවක් ම සිටින බව ය. එබැවින් මෙම කාරණය ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමයේ විධායක සභාව තුළ දීර්ඝව සාකච්ඡාවට බඳුන් විය. එහි අවසානයේ සියලුදෙනාගේ ම ඒකමතික තීරණය වූයේ ගෙවී ගිය රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුව සංගමයට වැයබරක් නොවී එමගින් යම් මුදලක් උත්පාදනය කර ආර්ථික දුෂ්කරතා මත තම පාසල් ගමන අක්‍රමවත්ව පවත්වාගෙන යන ආදරණීය දරුවන්ට පිහිටක් වීම වඩා සුදුසු බවය. ඒ අනුව රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුවෙන් උත්පාදනය වන අතිරික්ත මුදල ශිෂ්‍යයත්ව වැඩසටහනකට සහ ආහාර නොමැතිකමින් පාසල් නොපැමිණෙන දරුවන්ගේ කෑම වේල සපයා දීම සඳහා යෙදවීමට තීරණය විය.

එහි ප්‍රථම පියවර අරඹමින් පාසල විසින් හඳුනාගෙන ඇති දරුවන්ගේ ඉදිරි සය මාසයක ආහාර අවශ්‍යතා සඳහා අවශ්‍ය කරනු ලබන මුදල් වාරිකය පසුගිය 2024-07-21 වන දින පැවති විධායක සභා රැස්වීමේ දී ගරු විදුහල්පතිතුමාට අප විසින් පිරිනමනු ලැබීය. රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුවේ ප්‍රවේශපත්‍ර මිලදී ගත් සියලු ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයින්ට එහි ගෞරවය පිරිනැමෙන අතර ඔවුන් සියලුදෙනාටම නිරාමිස සතුටක් ලැබිය හැකිවෙනු ඇතැයි අපි විශ්වාස කරන්නෙමු.

ඉදිරියේ දී ශිෂ්‍යත්ව අරමුදල සහ පෝෂණ අවශ්‍යතා වෙනුවෙන් සංගමය රාත්‍රී සුහද හමුවෙන් ලද අතිරික්ත මුදල තවදුරටත් යෙදවීමට බලාපොරොත්තු වේ. එමෙන්ම මෙම වැඩසටහන වඩා සංවිධානාත්මකව නිශ්චිත ව්‍යාපෘතියක් යටතේ ඉදිරියට ගෙන යාමට ද අපේක්ෂා කරනු ලැබේ.

Heartfelt congratulations to distinguished Sumangalian Prof. Jagath Wansapala, Professor at the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura for receiving a “Merit Award” in the “Technical Field of Food Technology” for the invention “Extraction of Food Grade Agar from Gracilaria Verrucosa and Development of Agar Incorporated Set-Yoghurt Product (Group Effort), Patented Year – 2018” at the Presidential Awards for Investions 2024 organized by the Sri Lanka Investors Commission in coordination with the President Secretariat.

The Dinner Dance 2024 – Annual Get Together of the Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Association was held on June 29th, 2024, at the Ramadia Ranmal Holiday Resort, starting at 18:30. Our distinguished alumnus, Mr. Sarath Kumara Perera, Deputy General Manager of Programs at Independent Television Network, Sri Lanka, graced the event as the Chief Guest.

The SSCOBA honoured Mr. Anurath Abeyratne for his remarkable contribution to Sri Lanka’s national economy by reviving the Embilipitiya Paper Mill with an investment exceeding $16 million.

Master Binuka Minadith Perera was also felicitated for achieving the island rank of 8th in the Physical Science (Maths) stream in his A/Ls.

The presence of the old boys’ wives added a special touch to the evening. Several prizes were drawn during the get-together, and the audience was enthralled by the music of the AYU Band.

The Annual General Meeting of SSCOBA was held successfully on 29th June 2024 from 0830hrs onwards at the college auditorium with an overwhelming attendance of members. New office bearers were appointed for the year 2024/2025.

Mr. Amila Nawalage, Attorney at Law has been appointed as the President to steer the association this year. Mr. Nuwan Ranamayuru and Mr. Madhusanka Namasena were appointed as Joint Secretaries and Mr. Prabhath Tharaka Suranga was re-appointed as the Treasurer.

The meeting was attended by representatives from other affiliations of OBA including the President of Junior OBA Mr. Malith De Silva, the Coordinator of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys’ Medical Association Dr. Vidura Jayasinghe, and the President of the Past Cricketers’ Association Mr. Rohan Perera.

A large number of distinguished old boys of various disciplines took part in the event and expressed their views constructively.

The vote of thanks was given by the Jt. Secretary, Mr. Nuwan Ranamayuru.

Sumangalian (98 batch) Uditha De Silva of Sri Lanka Air Force has been recently promoted to the rank of Group Captain. Uditha joined Sri Lanka Air Force on 09 th February 2001 as an Officer Cadet and later he was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 9th July 2002. Uditha underwent training on basic combat training at Combat Training School Diyathalawa, basic flying training, and advanced flying training at No 1 Flying Training Wing at SLAF Base Anuradhapura. Subsequently, he was selected to fly helicopters and successfully completed his basic and advanced helicopter flying training at No 7 Helicopter Squadron, SLAF Base Hingurakgoda and later deployed as an operational pilot at No 9 Attack Helicopter Squadron, SLAF Base Hingurakgoda and VVIP rated pilot at No 4 Helicopter Squadron and No 6 Helicopter Squadron. He has flown and rated in PT 06, K8, Bell 206 Jet Ranger, Bell 212, Bell 412, Bell 412 EP, MI 17 and MI 24 Helicopters.

During the war on terror, his commitment towards motherland as an operational pilot in the face of the enemy was remarkable.

During his illustrious Air Force career spanning over more than two decades, Uditha has undergone several local and overseas training courses such as Junior Command & Staff Course and Defense Service Command Staff Course, Sea Survival Course in Pakistan, Flight Safety Officers course in Bangladesh, Flight Safety Maintenance and administration Course in India, International Flight Safety Officers course in Australia, Regional Security Studies Course in USA and Oil Spill Response course in Hawaii. In addition to that, he completed his Masters in Defense and Strategic Studies at Sir John Kotelawala Defense University.

Uditha De Silva was entrusted with many responsible appointments such as Directing Staff at JC&SC SLAF Academy China bay, Staff Officer Air Operations II at AFHQ and Officer Commanding of No 6I Flight at SLAF Base Rathmalana. He also served for United Nations as a Staff Officer Air Operation in 2015 and Chief Operation Officer in 2021 at Central African Republic. Presently he is holding the position of Commanding Officer of No 6 Helicopter Squadron at SLAF Base Anuradhapura.

As a helicopter pilot, he has logged more than 3000 flying hours in both Bell and MI Helicopters and he has been awarded with Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) two times for the act of bravery, which he had displayed during time of war in the face of the enemy.

He is a life member of SSCOBA and contributed in numerous ways to both SSCOBA and the Alma Mater.
